Whitewater Rafting Wisconsin

Kosir’s Rapid Rafts was Wisconsin’s first professional whitewater rafting outfitter with operations on both the “Roaring Rapids” section of the Peshtigo River and the mighty “Piers Gorge” section of the Menominee River. These are the most exciting and challenging whitewater rafting trips in Northern Wisconsin. We are the only Midwest Peshtigo River outfitter based on the river’s edge at the end of the famous “Roaring Rapids” section of the Peshtigo River. Our convenient and private landing is located at our company headquarters and campground We have a prime location on the shore of the Peshtigo River at the end of the “Roaring Rapids” section of the Peshtigo River. This section is one of the longest stretches of continuous whitewater in the Midwest.

Peshtigo River Rafting trips are available right next door at Kosir’s Rapid Rafts.

The Peshtigo River is world famous for its five miles of continuous class II, III and IV whitewater. The exciting Roaring Rapids section of the Peshtigo River includes three rock garden stretches and six main rapids, including ledges, waterfalls, and the legendary First Drop and Horserace Rapids.

The Roaring Rapids section of the river, even at low levels, has big enough rapids and waves that one will want either a decked boat (whitewater kayak), an inflatable one person raft (funyak, ducky), or float bags in a canoe to run it. Open canoes do not fare well on this stretch at all. They almost always swamp, fill with water, and then end up wrapped around a rock like a twist tie.

The rock that forms the river channel is a granite composite, more specifically a Precambrian crystalline dolomite, and as a result, there is very little water erosion and undercutting. That makes this river a lot safer than some with softer bedrock. At lower water, the rapids in this stretch rate Class II- III. At levels over about 800 cfs, they rate mostly III or IV. Again, you do not want to take a canoe down this stretch without float bags. If in doubt, raft it with Kosir’s Rapid Rafts first, and see what you are getting into.

Menominee River Rafting

Menominee River Rafting

Menominee River Rafting trips begin in Niagara, Wisconsin. The downriver trip offers a scenic view of 200-foot high cliffs lining the river as it heads toward the legendary Piers Gorge with its 10-foot waterfall. There is a trail system in the park that parallels the river. While kayaking or canoing is an option given careful portaging, this is not recommended unless you are very skilled.  The rapids get to be class IV to V, suitable for highly experienced boaters only.  A more preferred solution is to take a guided raft through a local outfitter.

Guided Whitewater Rafting Trips on the Menominee River are available next door at Kosir’s Rapid Rafts. Menominee River Rafting is a unique experience for the more adventurous whitewater rafters who want more! The mighty Menominee River is a large volume river which has one of the greatest flows in the Midwest. The Menominee River features rapids and hydraulics similar to those of great western rivers.

The Menominee River is located in the upper midwest and forms much of the border between the state of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Menominee River State Recreation Area straddles the banks of the scenic Menominee River for several miles. This Recreation Area is a collaborative effort between Wisconsin and Michigan. This collaboration had its beginnings in 1997 with lands donated to the Wisconsin DNR and Michigan DNR. Other lands have been added to the project over the years. The Wisconsin and Michigan parks are managed by their respective state Departments of Natural Resources.
